RECORDING ARTS | A Bachelor of Arts degree

The Recording Arts Department gives equal emphasis to film/television sound and music engineering/production. Our students explore the theoretical and practical elements of sound recording, reproduction, and design – the fundamentals crucial to successful work in all media that tap into the creative power of sound.

Given the enormous influence of these media, it is vital that these studies are given perspective by courses in LMU's Liberal Arts core curriculum. Recording Arts students are required to take one music class that deals with the fundamentals of music theory. In upper division courses, students study the science of sound behavior, reproduction and modification. They learn audio techniques that apply to both film/television sound and music recording.

The SFTV sound stages, studios and audio workstations are the laboratories where students put their knowledge and creativity to work and build a portfolio. Each Recording Arts student gains experience with film and television sound production and produces an advanced multitrack music recording as a senior project. Because the music portion of the Recording Arts program emphasizes the working relation between the engineer/producer and the music artist, Recording Arts students do not perform and record their own music, but must seek out talented musicians and produce the best possible version of the work of others. Creative collaboration is key to success in this field.

!u_Stavlogo
University of Stavanger, Norway
mark.drews@uis.no
MPR at the University of Stavanger

The University of Stavanger Department of Music and Dance offers a one-year, 60 ECTS credit, graduate program in Music Production and Recording. Intended for advanced students wishing to enhance their audio education though practical, hands-on exercises, the program emphasizes the recording of music in acoustic spaces and provides opportunities for students to work with a wide variety of performance. The University of Stavanger is the only university in Norway to offer this unique education.

This fulltime program of study is designed to supplement 2-4 years of higher education in music or audio related field, and applicants must document previous education and experience in these areas. The program also is a viable alternative to a traditional, music recording internship.

Music Production and Recording at the University of Stavanger provides students with different backgrounds a combination of musical and technical opportunities. Elements of the program can be modified to allow for specialization based on an individual student's interests.

International applicants, including ERASMUS exchange students, are welcomed and encouraged to apply. The language of instruction is English, and the program has hosted students from Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Scandinavia.

The program is completed in one academic year, beginning in mid-August and ending in mid-June. Instruction is given throughout the academic year, with much of the second semester focused on practical music production and recording projects.

The program includes group lectures, individual and small group instruction, study tours, and cooperative projects. The program is limited to a maximum of ten qualified students per year, and as practical exercises are emphasized, all students have generous amounts of studio time.

MPR Students are evaluated on a combination of papers and projects in music production and recording, as well as critical listening. In addition, students are required to complete a variety of live and studio productions.

Cooperative projects regularly involve the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the NuMusic Festival, the Siddis Brass Festival, the Mai-Jazz International Jazz Festival, the Shell Music Prize Competition, the Stavanger International Chamber Music Festival, and other professional music events.

The Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound shares the same campus as the MPR program and often provides unique research and work-study opportunities for interested students.

The Department of Music and Dance has several acoustic environments for music recording. The jazz auditorium is 155 square meters and is used primarily for solo and small ensemble recordings. The church simulator hall houses an 8-voice pipe organ and is used for performances requiring exceptionally "live" acoustics. The Small Concert Hall is 305 square meters and was earlier used by the Norwegian Broadcasting Company for recording the Stavanger Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Stavanger Concert House is used for recording the Stavanger Symphonic Orchestra and others. Professional recording studios are linked to these spaces, and these control rooms allow students to compare analogue and digital production technology and methods.

The program's newest control room/studio is for multi-channel surround recording, mixing, and signal processing. The studio is based around a Yamaha DM2000 v.2 digital mixing console, a variety of most major DAW systems, and a Genelec 5.1 monitor system. An additional control room is used for pre-production, editing, premastering, format transfer, and duplication.

A variety of portable equipment is available for remote recording, and students have many opportunities for using other venues within the region.

MPR students are encouraged to participate in excursions to professional studios and audio conventions within Norway and the rest of Europe, including the Nordic Sound Symposium and the annual Audio Engineering Society (AES) European Convention. Previous studio tours have included trips to Abbey Road Studios in London, and NRK, Lindberg, and Rainbow Studios in Oslo. The program is a member of the Society of Professional Audio Recording Services (SPARS).

Other undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the University of Stavanger's Department of Music and Dance include classical and jazz performance, chamber music, arranging and composition, conducting, and dance.

Enhance your education and experience with an academic year at the University of Stavanger. The annual deadline for applications is December 15th, and all students are encouraged to apply early. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the program director, Mark.Drews@uis.no.
